Washing Natural Hair with Maple Holistics’ Tea Tree Oil Shampoo and Condtioner

Wash day has become the bane of my existence. If this is your first time reading my blog then you would not have the slightest clue as to why I loathe wash day. But to make a long story short…. I am Lazy! I call myself a lazy naturalista for a reason, not just for laughs and giggles. If you have natural hair then you know the struggle that comes along with detangling and washing and oh yea you can’t forget the conditioning! It’s so stressful simply because my hair is always and I mean always tangled. How do you prepare your natural hair for wash day? I’ve seen some people do pre-poos and conditioning their hair before a wash, but as I mentioned before, my arms nor drive was built for that so I try to keep my process simple. Wash, Rinse and repeat.  Repeat with conditioner of course, then I’m done! I personally don’t see a need for a 7 step process on wash day because my 4 step process is long enough.  Because tangled hair and dandruff always seem to be my biggest problems on wash day, I try my best to find products that will take care of these problems  simultaneously while I am washing my hair. When Maple Holistics reached out to me to do a review on their Tea Tree Oil Shampoo and Tea Tree Oil Conditioner, I had to say of course because mere tea tree oil itself works heavens. Accepting hair products from an unknown company is always makes me cringe a little bit because our hair strands are just like any other cell in our body and can cause major reactions if it isn’t paired well with a complimentary product. So you all know I’m sensitive about my ishh(In the words of Miss. Erika Badu) What is Tea tree Oil? Tea tree oil is an essential oil that is widely known to heal wounds because of its antiseptic properties. Most people use tee tree oil topically to treat fungal infections, such as acne or dandruff. After this explanation you should have an idea as to why I have a love for Tea Tree Oil.  Maple Holistics Tea Tree Oil Shampoo (8oz) Price: $8.95Claims:Our Natural Tea Tree Oil Shampoo is the hair care solution you’ve been dreaming of! Boasting wonderful therapeutic benefits thanks to the incredible effects of natural tea tree oil, this shampoo can improve hair and scalp health while promoting hair growth and even slowing hair loss. Suitable for men, women, and children, our Tea Tree Oil Shampoo is cruelty-free, parabens-free, GMO-free, and gluten free. Promotes healthy hair growth. Can slow hair loss, shedding, and thinning hair. Helps prevent flaking and dandruff. Capable of soothing an irritated scalp. Potential to naturally eradicates lice. Leaves hair and scalp rejuvenated and fresh. What I think: Upon opening the shampoo, I could immediately smell the tea tree oil, it was probably the strongest I have ever smelled as it mimicked a menthol scent. Menthol doesn’t bother me much, but if you are sensitive to smell then stay clear. The shampoo had a medium consistency and I didn’t have to use much of the product to get a good lather. As I mentioned prior, washing my hair is so strenuous because the knots that form in my head are ridiculously hard to get out. Unfortunately, this shampoo made my hair even more knotted because it didn’t have any slip. Please be aware, the only shampoos that do have slip are moisturizing shampoos. The Tea Tree oil shampoo stripped my hair of any oils and residue that was built up on my strands. To some, this may sound scary, but for me I enjoyed it. I like giving my hair a good clarifying wash every now and then, other wise my hair will appear limp.I can definitely say after my first wash my scalp felt as if it could breathe again! It claims to reduce dandruff however I won’t be able to truly notice results with only one or two uses. But in the present moment, the dandruff has subsided.I probably wouldn’t use this as a weekly shampoo, but on the days I want my hair to be really purified and rid of residue, this bad boy is it!As a curly girl, you have to make sure that you are restoring your hair’s natural PH balance and moisture for optimal health. In this case, if you were to use the Maple Holistics Tea Tree Oil shampoo please deep condition to replenish your strands. Maple Holistics Tea Tree Oil Conditioner (8oz) Price: $12.77 Claims: Maple Holistics Tea Tree Conditioner provides the hair conditioning treatment you’ve been waiting for! By utilizing safe and effective conditioning agents – including our star ingredient, tea tree oil – our Tea Tree Conditioner will condition and soften your hair like no other. Our formula, which features complex plant derived keratin, silk protein amino acids, Vitamin B5, and more, can help you achieve a clearer, healthier scalp with the silky, easy-to-handle hair of your dreams! Made with all-natural ingredients. Conditions for an all-natural and satisfying result. Utilizes quality conditioning agents. Can improve dry, curly, thinning, frizzy, brittle, static, and wavy hair – and more! Therapeutic-grade. What I Think: I applied this conditioner directly after I applied the Tea Tree Shampoo. It applied pretty smoothly and had a thicker consistency. The scent was similar to the shampoo but less potent. It offered adequate slip for the detangling process and added needed moisture back into my strands. A deep conditioning treatment was still beneficial after the shampoo process in order to really restore full moisture. With the use of this conditioner my hair was smoother than it was prior to use. I noticed that the product does include some silk protein so if you’re protein sensitive (as I am sometimes) you don’t want to overly use the product.  Overall, I have mixed feelings about this product. Don’t get me wrong, It was a good product but I

How to make a Lace Frontal from start to finish: Nearly Perfect Hair

Who says you can’t teach an old track new tricks? About a year ago I purchased hair from my store that I wore as a weave a couple times. I will be the first to say that I did not take care of the hair like I should have because I am just a lazy person. Suffice to say, my hoarding ways did not let me part from the tracks nor the frontal. So what does anyone do when they need a new hairstyle fast with no money? They make a wig. Yes issa wig! Several people have asked me in the past to show how I make my wigs, so what better way to show the world than to make a video? Think’s you’ll need: Any patterned bundles of tracked hair. 3 Bundles of Malaysian hair found hereLace frontalCurved NeedleThreadBandWig capWhite eyeliner/chalk Do you have any bundles of hair laying around that you’re ready to transform to a wig?

Do’s and Dont’s for Healthy Natural Hair: Nearly Perfect Strands

Imagine being in a line up with your fellow curly-girl friends who are auditioning for a Tresemme commercial. They mysterious voice tells you turn left, and then right, in order to have an accurate profile of your hair. That same voice then requests that you step forward and list all the things you do to your hair, in order to weed out the best answers for the commercial. He asks you, “Do you put conditioner on before your oil or after?” What do you say? Do you give the same response your loc’ed friend gives? How do you know what’s the right answer? That’s just it! There isn’t a “right answer” when it comes to hair, however there are some DO’s and Don’t’s that you may want to follow in order to optimize the health of your hair. Do… Make sure you deep condition at least twice a month. Each day out hair loses vast amounts o moisture because of the reaction it has with the air. Deep conditioning at least once a week, or once every other week at minimum helps to restore our hair’ elasticity and strength. Don’t… Overly saturate your hair in conditioner everyday. Depending on the make up of your hair, over saturation can break the protein bonds that your hair holds and can lead to broken hair structures. Protein in our hair produces keratin which aids in hair growth and strength. Overdoing it in the conditioning department is a no go! Do… Be sure to clarify your hair at least once a week. I may get some backlash for this, but before you send in the troops, let’s take in the facts. If your hair isn’t in a protective style, chances are you are applying products like moisturizers or gels to style your hair. Overtime those products promote product buildup. For my avid co-washers, this may not seem like a problem, but trust me, down the road your hair will lose its shine and will become limp. Clarifying your hair gives your hair a fresh stat. That doesn’t mean you have to use harsh chemicals, but try switching over to a clarifying conditioner, or a sulfate-free shampoo to ensure you are rinsing away those products from your strands. Don’t… Overly use products that contain sulfates. Though it may be hard to find products that don’t have sulfates when you want a good shampoo, it is possible! Look for products that contain sodium cocoyl isethionate or cocamidopropyl betaine, which are less harsh on your strands. Do… Know your hair’s porosity. Knowing your hair’s porosity is one of the major players in the world of hair. There are sites like http://www.porosity411.com/, where you can learn more about porosity and take tests to figure out where you fall. Being aware of your hair’s porosity allows you to create a regimen that works for you. Certain products that we use doesn’t always react the same in low porosity hair as it would in high porosity hair. Having this knowledge may even permit you to reduce some of your regimen steps! Don’t… Assume your hair regimen will be the same as a fellow person’s. Yea, you and ‘becky with the good hair’ may have the same porosity levels, but that doesn’t guarantee that her regimen will mirror yours. You may have a different reaction to her Deva Curl Low Poo because you may have a protein sensitivity or even a sensitivity to other ingredients. So now that you’ve just gained some knowledge, picture yourself back in that line up and it’s your turn to speak. You’re not nervous anymore because you know that your healthy hair regimen is perfect just for you!

5 Secrets Natural Hair Gurus WON’T Share

Source We all have that one natural hair guru we stalk on Instagram or YouTube, and we are downright proud to be a part of their notification gang. But do we really know what it took for them to achieve such social media fame? Did they really become influencers over night or was there some kind of secret we weren’t told? Here are 5 things you did not know about being a natural hair influencer. 1. ALL natural hair influencers have hands in hair syndrome It is impossible to be an influencer and not have our hands in our hair all day. We are constantly trying new styles to put on our snap chat or Instagram stories. And truth be told we have an image to upkeep. God forbid we go a week and not share a new style or post a new method to make lives easier. Hands in hair syndrome is not the greatest syndrome to have because constant manipulation of your hair can sometimes slow growth. But for our fans, it is worth the risk. 2. Consistency is key because Natural hair influencers are entertainers That’s right, this here is a major key alert! You cannot be an influencer with a great following and expect people to follow you if you aren’t consistent. Think about it. We know every Sunday at 10pm we need stop our lives, sit on our couches and tune in for Power on HBO. Just like the television world, the only way to maintain viewers, followers, friends ectara is to consistently upload and keep your audience entertained. This does not necessarily mean you must post a picture the same time every day, however keeping a constant schedule does help maintain the consistency. If you are a YouTube channel, you also may want to stick to a specific day or time so your viewers can return to your page knowing there is a new treat for them. 3. Natural Hair Influencers are indeed product junkies We don’t want to consider ourselves hoarders because by all means we do not do these things intentionally. We do however become product junkies because we must be abreast of the newest eco styler gel or natural hair product line. We often get products sent to us for free in exchange for an honest review which also adds to the collection. But who would say no to free products? I sure didn’t! 4. We enjoy protective styles, we get frustrated too As much as we love creating new styles for our followers and fans, we absolutely enjoy having the extra time on our hands to just relax. Doing our hair is time consuming and acts as a second job. Being able to just get up and go in the morning without unbraiding or bobby pinning makes life feel like a vacation. 5. Natural hair influencers appreciate inspiration Believe it or not, everyone is inspired by someone. And even though some influencer may have millions of followers, there is certainly someone else who we have looked up to and have been inspired by. It doesn’t necessarily have to be another influencer, it could be just another lovely natural hair beauty that has encapsulated our phone screens. Nonetheless, inspiration is what helps build our content which in turns builds our status! What other secrets do you know about Natural hair gurus? Share in the comment below!

3 Tips for Transitioning Hair From Summer to Fall

It seems like it was just yesterday when we bought those versace shades and high waisted bikinis for the beach. Unfortunately, summer is slowly coming to an end and our hair regimen has to be altered for the Fall. But before you start piling those products into a crate for storage, take a look at three hair habits that you can still use in the Fall that worked wonders in the Summer. 1. Condition, Condition, ConditionWe use a lot of conditioner in  the summer in order to have our curls pop and not have to depend on a strong hold gel. however, as Fall approaches we can still use those same conditioners to ensure that our hair is still properly deep conditioned! Fall is the gateway for colder climate transitions, so we want to make sure our hair is properly prepared and the moisture is retained. Conditioners are definitely keepers! 2. Keep your hair short! Most Women in the summer tend to have a short hair look. Just the thought of your curly coils hitting your back makes you feel stick so you end up putting it in a bun. You can keep that bun right where it is because tucked ends in the Fall can help to retain length as well so that your hair ends are not rubbing up against your favorite sweater. 3. Wash your hair oftenWe tend to sweat more in the summer via intense runs outdoors or just laying out on the beach with our hair laid out on a towel. Because of the buildup of sebum we can be more inclined to washing our hair more frequently to get rid of dirty or sweat. As Fall approaches we can still continue to wash our hair even two or three times a week. A common misconception is that kinkier hair shouldn’t be washed often because it will be stripped of oils. Though this would be true if we are constantly washing with sulfates, it doesn’t stand true if you choose to wash with a sulfate free shampoo or washing with a conditioner. In fact our hair loves water and the more water you apply to hair the happier it will be as water is the only TRUE moisturizer! What hair habits are you going to still use during Autumn?

Natural Hair Twist Out and Braid Out Kit- Nearly Perfect Twist and Braids

It’s summertime and it sounds like the right time to let our tresses breathe don’t you think so? I have had my Toni ( what I named my hair) stifled underneath a weave for too long and she is screaming, “let me out!” You guys know me already, I have struggled with product junky-ism in the past and recovered from the syndrome about two years ago. I have tried to use up all of the products sitting under my bathroom sink before stepping foot into a hair care aisle but it is really hard to do! Recently, I was contacted by a Representative of Alodia Hair Care to become a brand ambassador. Yes, that sounds great BUT it means that I am putting myself at risk for my product junkie nature again. But I do this all for you guys. I was sent the Twist and Braid Out style Kit to review and I must say that I fell in love despite my hair’s resistance at time. This kit is perfect for every natural as the kit helps you to start a natural hair regimen. Let us take a further look on what is included in the kit: 1. Nourish and Hydrate conditioning shampooThis product did well with cleansing my scalp considering it didn’t contain any sulfates! I fell in love with this product once it hit my scalp. It did not provide the tingly sensation that typical occurs with a shampoo but I knew my hair was being cleansed once I felt my hair. I am an old fashion chick and truth be told I sincerely love a good lather but this shampoo was lather free. 2. Nourish and Hydrate Deep conditioner I used this deep conditioner following my shampoo and it did okay considering the density of the product. I think this product is best used with heat as I tried without heat and it didn’t do anything for my hair. I sat underneath a hooded dryer with a plastic cap for approximately 20 mins and then washed it out. My hair’s curls were on fleek!!!! Unfortunately the shine and the defined curls did not last too long. After 15 minutes my hair was almost a puff ball. So word to the wise: use the product fast! 3. Nourish and Moisturize Hair creamOut of all the products this product was my least favorite. It was a great product but it was too heavy for my low porosity hair. I have learned that my hair tends to absorb lighter density products better but this was nourishing to say the least. I applied this product after my deep conditioner and it did moisturize my hair! It provided great definition for my braid out and the hold was semi strong. It is a great alternative to a gel product that actually provides hold and sheen. 4. Nourish and Grow OilThis oil was by far the best I mean best oil i have ever used in my life. The mixture of the rosewood and thyme helped to ease the dryness and provided the right amount of shine! It also made my hair smell delicious! The density of the oil was perfect and the nozzle provided with the oil bottle made for an easy application! Overall, I would definitely recommend this kit to anyone seeking defined braids and twist without the hassle of a gel or styling cream. The system works perfectly especially for those with high porosity hair! I am definitely going to be keeping at least the oil in stock because my hair flourishes with it! Don’t worry, I won’t harbor too many under my sink! For 10% off of Your order at Alodiahaircare.com use code: Felicia10 For a more in depth review about these products watch the video below! =)

Summer products for Natural Hair

*Originally posted 7/8/11 Dry hair, have no fear, your favorite summer product is near! This summer as your hair is drying out, and you want to look great in your vacation photos, please don’t blame your moisturizer’s incompetency. Often times we tell ourselves, “I am never buying this product again, it sucks.” Most moisturizers are tailored to suit different hair needs, and different weather conditions, which is no fault of the brand who created the product. If it were anyone’s, it would be the buyer, for not being knowledgeable. If your hair moisturizer’s main ingredient isn’t water and glycerin than you may have a problem. Dryer times call for more ingredients that actually fill the hair follicles with excessive moisturizer. The two main ingredients you may want to look for in products are water and glycerin. We all know what water is so let me tell you what glycerin is: Glycerin is a neutral, sweet-tasting, colorless, thick liquid which freezes to a gummy paste and has a high boiling point. Glycerin can be dissolved into water or alcohol, but not oils. On the other hand, many things will dissolve into glycerin easier than they do into water or alcohol. So it is a good solvent. According to Pioneer thinker: Glycerin is also highly “hygroscopic” which means that it absorbs water from the air. Example: if you left a bottle of pure glycerin exposed to air in your kitchen, it would take moisture from the air and eventually, it would become 80 per glycerin and 20 percent water. Because of this hygroscopic quality, pure, 100 percent glycerin placed on the tongue may raise a blister, since it is dehydrating. Diluted with water, however, it will soften your skin. (Note: While people say this softening is the result of the glycerin attracting moisture to your skin, there is heated debate as to whether or not the glycerin has some other properties all its own which are helpful to the skin. Summed up, the current thinking is “We know glycerin softens the skin. SourceWhat does this mean? This means that glycerin is our friend! It helps our hair strands promote moisture. So before you go and buy another moisturizer why not just buy glycerin, mix it with that free water you have waiting to burst out of your faucets and save yourself some money! You don’t want your hair weighed down with unnecessary heavy hair products anyway.I typically find my glycerin in a local hair store or Walmart. Summer doesn’t have to mean spending money on new hair products, but instead it just means you have improvise and take those vacation photos with hair that shine!
