Health News: Corn Syrup

Corn Syrup (aka high-fructose corn syrup): a sweet syrup obtained from cornstarch

That’s the definition I got from my dictionary. I’m on the quest for healthy eating. I noticed this ingredient in just about every food product label. Even in the one’s that are supposed to be healthy. When I go shopping I like to be in and out ASAP. Reading the labels is not on my agenda. Lately, it’s been something I’ve been paying alot more attention to. I was eating a sandwich (wheat bread) and noticed corn syrup on the label. Bread doesn’t need to be sweetened??? It’s really hard not to find these ingredients as they are in just about everything. I’m no expert and I don’t want to get into the politics of it all. But, these research/studies whatever they are called produces mixed results which confuses the eff out of me. Seems like what’s good for you is bad and what’s bad is good. The journey continues…. scratching my head. Has anyone been through this? What’s so bad/good about corn syrup?

  1. i know nothing… but i'll give my little 2 cents. When i took my chem lab last semester (for non-majors: shows how much I know), my professor said that HFCS (high fructose corn syrup… I'm lazy) is a simple sugar. It does NOT process the same way as regular sugar (knocking out the myth that "our body can't tell the difference").

She basically went on a rant that concluded with simple sugars (like HFCS) are already broken down (through processing). So the body takes it up a lot quicker (into the bloodstream) since it doesn't have to waste time and energy breaking it down. The problem with this is the sugar high and crash. The body takes up really fast then youre jittery… soon after, you crash.

At the end of the little tangent, she added that she can definitely feel the difference in her body when she drinks ONE.SODA.BRAND compared to other said SODA.BRAND. One has HFCS… the other has sugar. She doesn't get the jitters then a crash.

Obviously, I don't know that much about chemistry (passed with a B for that lab)… but I hope this was somewhat helpful. Good luck on getting healthy!
